Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all. - Stanley Horowitz

Around the Farm

Work around the farm is in fall clean-up mode. Much of the garden produce has been harvested, field work is being done in preparation for winter, and the broiler chickens are processed and in the freezer.

The music studio, Harvest Haven Harmony is coming along nicely. The ceiling and walls have been stripped of old coverings and spray foamed for insulation.

We received huge pine logs and are milling them into lumber for covering the interior of the studio. It's going to look and smell wonderful. The band can hardly wait.

James has some more toys for his big sandbox (our farm). A small grader (small is a relative term, as I think it's big) and a packer now call Harvest Haven home. James will use these to repair the roads on the farm, so they're not mud holes when it rains or the snow melts.

Plans have been formulated for a trout pond in the back forty, too. James will get to play all day with his new toys executing that project. We haven't seen him this happy!

Martin picked up another trailer (remember, "You can never have too many trailers!"). While telling us about this addition to his collection, he mentioned it might be a good idea to get a big semi flat deck trailer – useful for hauling James's toys, you know. Jeannie's dad is a semitruck driver and has his own unit we could perhaps use. I guess we'll see.

Harvest Haven Pastured Turkey- Order Now

Harvest Haven turkeys are truly pasture-raised and free range. Our birds are in the pasture all summer where they get to scratch, hunt for bugs, and eat all the greens they want. If there's one thing we've learned, it's that healthy birds need lots of sunlight and salad. And if a turkey doesn't have the ability and freedom to express every part of its scratchy, diggy little personality, something's wrong with how they're being raised.

We have two dates for fresh turkeys.

The first one this year is September 29 – October 1, which is 1˝ weeks before Thanksgiving. We were unable to get a slaughter date closer to that weekend.

Also, we don't have room in our freezer to keep the turkeys, so we ask that you pick yours up fresh September 29 to October 1.

There will be a $10.00 fee/bird for freezing and another $1.00/day after October 8th. Please keep in mind that even if you pay the fees, we are nevertheless limited in freezer space.

The second date for pick-up is October 24 and 26 (we're closed Monday, October 25).

Please make a point of scheduling the date in your calendar. As our business continues to grow, reminding everybody to pick up their orders is becoming unrealistic.

The cost of our whole turkeys is $6.29/lb. We require a down payment of $50/bird to reserve your order. You'll pay the balance on pick-up.

REMEMBER TO BRING SOMETHING TO TRANSPORT YOUR TURKEY IN.

Order here.

Tasty Treats

We have a large selection of nuts, seeds, and dried fruits in the cooler section where they are kept fresh and nutritious. Because nuts and seeds have a high content of unsaturated fatty acids/oils, they will go rancid if exposed to light and warm air. And dried fruits keep much longer and fresher in cool conditions.

We have all the essentials, like walnuts, almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, dates, and raisins, and even numerous varieties of these. Our nut selection includes raw Macadamias, Brazil nuts, roasted almonds, raw and roasted cashews, and pistachios. In the seed section, you'll find flax, hemp, poppy, pumpkin, and Chia seeds. There are lots of dried fruits to choose from such as banana chips, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, Incan berries, figs, ginger, mango, and pineapple.

These tasty treats make great snacks for back to school and busy fall days, or nutritious additions to your favorite muffin or cookie recipe.

Our Farm Favorites

Harvest Haven Pastured Chicken Deli Meat – This is a recent addition to our deli meat selection. It's 100% Harvest Haven Pastured Chicken breast that's been smoked and sliced thin. Talk about a professional chef's touch as a delicious option for sandwiches or cold plates.

Harvest Haven Buns and Sandwich Bread – White fluffy bread made with ALL organic ingredients, moist and rich-flavored, perfect for sandwiches or just spread with butter and honey. Since we have a bread slicer, we can venture into making softer, lighter loaves of bread made with oil, eggs, and sugar.

The buns are beautifully soft and light – perfect for hamburgers.

L'Ancetre Organic Cheddar Cheese Slices – These handy slices are mild, delicately salty, tangy flavored with a buttery finish. With their firm, smooth, slightly creamy texture, they'll just melt in your mouth. Add them to sandwiches and lunch boxes or a slice of toast for instant flavor.

Organic Pecans – This native of northern Mexico and the Southern United States is a nutrition powerhouse packed with vitamins and minerals. Their rich, buttery flavor and natural sweetness make a tasty snack and a delicious addition to your baking.

Organic Peanuts – Categorized as "nuts" for culinary purposes, peanuts are really legumes that are valuable in crop rotations in warmer climates for improving soil fertility. However, they are similar in taste and nutritional profile to "tree nuts" such as walnuts and almonds.

Tidbit fun fact: peanut butter was developed in the 1880's and 1890's in the United States and Canada.

Organic Dried Cranberries – A sweet treat with a tad of tartness. They are a bright garnish on salads or chicken dishes, and a refreshing alternative to raisins in your muffin recipes.

Organic Sunflower Seeds – Tiny powerhouses of nutrition, high in protein and rich in healthy fats, as well as antioxidants that are beneficial to your health. They have a mild, nutty flavor, and a firm but tender texture. Roasting enhances the flavor.

Just a few of the many uses for these crunchy, tasty seeds – add to trail mix, sprinkle on salads, stir into hot or cold cereal, sprinkle over yogurt, top casseroles, add to baked goods.

Camino Organic 80% Dark Chocolate Bar – Camino is a Canadian brand of fair trade and organic food products, owned by La Siembra Co-operative, based in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Established in 1999, La Siembra Co-operative became the first registered importers of Fairtrade Certified cocoa and sugar in North America and today works with 25 producer co-ops, supporting more than 47,500 family farmers in 14 countries.

Camino products are excellent! And this Extra Dark chocolate bar with its smooth intensity is the best.

BC Organic McIntosh Apples – Did you know the Mac is the national apple of Canada? An all-purpose apple, its tart flavor and tender white flesh make it good for both cooking and eating raw.

Harvest Haven Pastured Eggs – The hens have been enjoying the fresh outdoors, scratching in the dirt, and poking through the grass for bugs. Enjoy free range eggs from hens that get to be hens.

Down on the Farm

Walk by Faith

Victor's new single is now available on SoundCloud.

Victor wrote this song in 1975, added to it in 1985, and had it produced by John Capek of Nashville this summer.

From Victor:

This is the first song I ever wrote as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, or even as an unbeliever... nothing fancy by any stretch but it amazes me how that we knew so much about the principles of the Kingdom while yet babes in Christ. It was all there. This was only months after my wife Marilyn and I received the Spirit in the late eve of January 1, 1975.

Twenty-one years later, I found we had been learning what we'd known from the beginning, that faith and obedience are the keys and substance of the walk with God and that we must renounce all carnal thought and participation in men's religious works in order to be in fellowship with God. It's one or the other; a mixture will not do.

Was the whole package there when we began? The entire oak tree is in the acorn; when ripe, it falls from the tree, hopefully, gets buried, germinates, and springs up as a tree, matures, and multiplies itself manifold.

Forty-five years later, we can declare that the Lord has done these things with us, for which we can be everlastingly thankful. After all, this has been His Plan.
