Martin's Ruminations

So, the response to my ruminations in the previous Harvest Haven Happenings proved my point. I don't know if there's much to be said, but I'll likely go on for a while, anyway. For all of you who witnessed the reaction on the Harvest Haven Facebook page, you'll know what I'm talking about. I rest my case.

I hope those who witness these conflagrations understand the gravity of these matters. It's too easy to ignore the steady and surprisingly rapid decline of our culture, hoping and perhaps praying that it won't impact us too negatively.

It could have been said years ago that the enemy was at the gates. I think the hideous behaviour of these growling zombies has aptly proven that now the enemy is among us. Many of the people you may deal with regularly in your day to day life are the same kinds of folks that went viciously wild on us in these posts.

For those of you who haven't witnessed the ugly response on our Facebook page, we've left the record for all to see. A quick glance is all you'll need. The essence of their vile speech is enough to make your stomach turn. You're free to confirm the matter for yourself, but I should warn you, with no exaggeration, that what some of them have had to say is uglier than death itself.

Let me put it this way: Give these haters of Truth the absolute power to demonstrate their moral fiber and they would make the Nazis look like ballerinas at a dance recital.

At the very least, the Nazis, in all their hatred and horrid depravity, were justifying their violence and vitriol with the end goal of a pure, powerful, and productive empire. Don't think for a second I believe there's anything good about their goal. It was pure evil. There was even a Jewish girl who, reflecting on the state of Europe after the war, said, "At least in Hitler's Germany, the trains ran on time."

Those who attacked us are worse than Nazis. They rape, kill, and destroy for pure pleasure and entertainment. They don't envision a "glorious world of productivity and order" that justifies their hatred of mankind and thirst for conflict. They live to mock, curse, kill, and defile. They have no objective after that. They have no ideals. They have no love.

These our antagonists hardly pretend to be the defenders of equality and freedom and their actions clearly demonstrate that. They claim that we have no respect for other genders, races, classes, or practisers of other religions. And yet on account of being a white heterosexual male Christian who isn't on welfare, I am public enemy number one. Only lawless people with their hearts set on destruction isolate specific identities and spend all day discussing identity politics and how they can divide, condemn, and conquer. Convince me otherwise.

We know people according to their fruits, not by their appearances or the virtues they attempt to colour themselves with like children scribbling with crayons. But we are clear on one thing: Truth will always prevail in the end and in times like these, we are so thankful to know that.

Closed Mondays for Farming and Construction

Martin exclaimed excitedly, "I'm done! I'm done the plastering."

That job is finished, and it looks very nice.

Now, we should say we're closed Mondays for taxes and lambing. If it was only that simple – getting the taxes done in one or two days and the lambs coming only on Mondays. We all know that's not going to happen. At least both should be finished by the end of March.

Brett continues to demonstrate his expertise in cabinet building with his work on the check-out counter and display cases for Grander products. There are so many details he considers that the rest of us overlook in our inexperience.

Jeannie is planning the layout for the shelving units in the main shopping area.

And here's a comforting piece of news – the bathrooms have running water.

Compliments Only Box

Thanks everyone for your wonderful compliments. Know that all of you are appreciated, too.

Here is a sample of the responses that sum up what most had to say.

I really enjoy the newsletters [and] Martin's write ups. I'm always on the same page with all of you and appreciate the effort and information that is shared! Love Gabi

CONGRATULATIONS Martin your well written truth about Hitler was the best l have read thank you. Excellent! Keep it up! Lorraine

That was a well written newsletter. Tough subject. As a fellow business owner, I understand that it can be difficult to cater to everyone's ideas, habits, belief's, etc. I have felt for you with the tough situations you have been involved with in the last year. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your newsletter and found today's very interesting. Take Care, Cris

We love the wonderful food you offer! We love the great conversations and learning opportunities! Nancy and Troy

Best place in Southern AB to buy Organic eggs and Produce. June

Best lamb I have ever had!!!! Jolene

Hands down the best place for food that tastes like it should! We love the fresh fruit and veggies, it's the only place we go for strawberry picking now too! We had an amazing opportunity to visit part of the farm years ago, and it was an experience my family will never forget. We love this place! Erin

I'm from a far country, and you should know that you are a role model to me out here. I admire your farm practices and methods...hoping one day to practice the same organic methods that you practice. Chris

This last comment is longer, but June has put into words what many of our customers have said to us. Thank you, June, for your thoughtful comment.

I was introduced to Harvest Haven 20+ years ago and loved driving out there even if to only witness the framing and construction of some of their buildings on the property. I thought then that I couldn't afford to buy many of their goods or produce and focused only on a few special items as a treat. Now as I transition to aged years I see and appreciate the value in real food that I was accustomed to in my childhood family home.

Driving to Harvest Haven now is like going to my childhood market stalls in one place - except I can't get fresh raw milk (I won't want it now anyway as my kids are all grown up). Going into their store feeds my mind, body, and spirit.

Their friendliness and engaging conversations feed my mind that enhances my own thoughts like being with good people who become your aunty and cousins like in the Caribbean. We laugh a lot and they put up with my crazy antics. Such fun!

Going for regular massages has become inconvenient this past year so I've started to use their Chi Machine and Hot House - oh my, what an amazing experience every. single. time! Just haven't been able to reconnect with my favourite massage therapist but maybe it's time to move on - Chi and Hot House are things that I can easily embrace and sure appreciate the expertise at Harvest Haven.

I use the Grander board to rejuvenate just about everything I consume and particularly my relationship with drinking water has blossomed to total dependence; and now cannot water my plants, or drink, or cook with any other than Grander water. It's a great travelling companion! Can't wait to be able to get my Berkey there too - next on my list!

And nothing beats everything organic - all my herbs, seasonal fruits and veggies, and especially grass-fed meats - the bestest of organic standards.
Most of all - if my spirit didn't feel good there I wouldn't keep going back. As soon as I enter their property, I feel I can breathe. The ground is comforting to walk on and pleasant to explore in good weather as time permits. The care and attention they give to every detail in their business comes from the simple understanding and practice of principles of the Bible. I feel honoured and blessed for the opportunity to partake of their consecrated labour to provide the best natural food and health products for our sustenance and well being and to support their courage in searching and standing for all that is truth.
Thank you, Harvest Haven family!

2 lb Harvest Haven carrots, cleaned and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 tablespoon Harvest Haven honey
1 tablespoon sriracha
salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon oil

Toss the carrots in the mixture of the honey, sriracha, salt & pepper and oil, arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 400F/200C oven until tender, about 15-20 minutes, turning once in the middle. (Tip: Don't pour any excess honey and sriracha onto the baking sheet as it will just burn; save it and toss the roasted carrots in it again before serving.)

Roast-Chicken-with-Blueberry-Orange-Sauce

Roasted Chicken with Orange Blueberry Sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
5 tablespoons orange marmalade
½ teaspoon dried thyme
1 Harvest Haven chicken, cut into eighths
½ cup chopped Harvest Haven onions or shallots
1 ½ cups blueberries
½ cup Harvest Haven chicken bone broth
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Heat oven to 375. In a small bowl, combine mustard, salt, pepper, 2 tablespoons of the marmalade and ¼ teaspoon of the thyme. Rub all over the chicken.

Place chicken skin side down in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with onions. Bake 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan over medium heat combine 1 cup of the blueberries, broth, lemon juice, remaining 3 tablespoons marmalade and remaining ¼ teaspoon thyme.

Bring to a boil.

Let simmer, stirring frequently, until reduced by half and thickened until it coats the back of a spoon. Set aside.

Turn chicken skin side up. Spoon pan drippings over chicken. Bake another 25 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and golden brown.

Transfer to a platter and cover to keep warm.

While pan is still hot, pour in blueberry mixture, scrapping up onions and drippings. Stir in remaining ½ cup blueberries. If sauce is too thick, thin with a little water. Spoon over chicken and serve.

Oatmeal-Date-Cookies

Oatmeal Date Cookies

1 1/2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 Harvest Haven egg
1/3 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup chopped Medjool dates
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350° F.

In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients — oatsl, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

In another bowl combine the wet ingredients — egg, maple syrup, butter and vanilla.

Add the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Gently stir in the chopped dates and walnuts.

Place dough in the fridge to setup for 30 minutes (do not skip this step).

Drop rounded tablespoons onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a baking stone. Make sure you space the cookies out because they tend to spread a bit. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cookies are golden brown.

Allow cookies to cool on the pan for 1-2 minutes then gently move to a wire rack and cool completely before eating or transferring to a storage container for later.

Down on the Farm

Food Poisoning and Salmonella – What are the risks and where do they originate?

In this video, Martin explains where salmonella originates and why free-range poultry produces risk-free eggs and meat.

He also discusses why grass-fed meats are safe. It's the grain-fed livestock in feedlots (CAFOs – Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) that's the problem. No amount of government intervention will help if it doesn't address the issue of how the animals are raised.
